The diocese of North West Australia is one of 23 independent dioceses that belong to the denomination called the Anglican Church of Australia. Our diocese was established in 1910. The current bishop is Gary Nelson (since May 2012), who is resident in Geraldton (about 420kms north of Perth). Holy Cross Cathedral is also situated in Geraldton.
The governance structure is shaped by the Synod that meets every second year with ministers and representatives from all the parishes. A Diocesan Council, elected by the Synod, meets throughout the year for oversight of the diocesan administration. The diocesan office is located in the Geraldton with the Registrar (Dr Khim Harris) overseeing its operations. It is situated on the southern side of the Cathedral.
Due to the nature of our region we are essentially a ‘missionary’ diocese. It is dependent on support by individuals, parishes, dioceses and Christian organisations (eg. BCA) across Australia who are committed to gospel ministry in small, remote and isolated towns/communities in North West Australia.
The Diocese of North West Australia is committed to providing be a safe place for all. The Synod has approved a Professional Standards Statute that provides the framework for our policies and procedures in churches.
